As Seen On

I read something recently that asked people what they saw themselves doing in January, stating that the question was being asked in September because the results or rewards of your efforts and actions right now usually show up 90 days later.

Huh.  That’s pretty interesting.  When I think about it, the number 90 comes up repeatedly in reference to change.  The seasons in nature change pretty much every 90 days.  I’ve also heard that it takes 90 days to break a bad habit, and that it likewise takes 90 days to create a new habit.

The truth is that you CAN actually reinvent yourself and change your life in 90 days…or you can at least get started down the path to that reinvention and change, even though you’re living with chronic illness. You don’t have to do it all in one fell swoop in 90 days, but the efforts that you begin making today can reward you in huge ways in January.  Incremental steps daily can result in changes that you’ve only dreamed about or may have even doubted that you could achieve up until now.

The autumnal equinox is today, so it’s the first day of Fall and the timing and energy are perfect to get started on what you want to create in your life in the next 90 days.

“Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.” ~ F. Scott Fitzgerald

Traditionally, the Fall equinox is seen as being about balance (at a specific time today, there will be exactly 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of darkness at the equator, so it is literally about balance) and about harvesting what we planted several months ago.  We receive the rewards and consequences of our actions and thoughts over these past months.  It’s a time to be grateful for the things that we have and what we have achieved; plus, it’s a perfect time to examine the balance in our own lives and to reflect on what we’ve done and how we’ve managed our challenges over the past several months.

So, what do you see and how do you feel when you think about the balance in your own life and how you’ve managed the past several months?

  • Did you plant seeds in the Spring and then neglect them afterward?  Or did you intend to plant seeds in the Spring, but never get around to actually doing it?
  • Where are things skewed in your life? What areas need your attention the most?—Even better, what areas of your life exist where you owe it to yourself to put in more effort or attention?
  • What do you want your life to look like in January?  What do you want to achieve and how do you want to feel in 90 days?  Who do you want to be on your way to being when January starts?

Often, we associate the Fall with enjoying the colors of the leaves and preparing to hunker down and hide out for the winter, but it’s actually a great time to start something new.  Those blazing colors of the fall foliage before the leaves drop are actually the herald of an ending before nature prepares to work on a new beginning during the winter season.  What things do we need to end so that we can have a new beginning?  For our “new beginning,” we can start with a new way of thinking and perhaps a new approach to life and how we live it.  The upcoming longer nights and colder weather lead to spending more time indoors with ourselves, so we can really give thought to and nurture the seeds we plant now over the next 90 days.
